What is Kimics?
Kimics (Kim + Comics) - Kimics is an art apparel, stationary and home accessory brand named after the illustrator’s first name Kim and the applied comic-ish style, started in 2019. It brings stories to life through transforming digital illustrations into allover print pullovers, graphic t-shirts, fine art prints and gift cards. It aspires to bring joy, colour and a means for creative self-expression into a world of beige.
Who is behind Kimics?
Kim Grote, born in Tokyo, grew up in Germany and spent periods of her life in Dubai, Sydney, Berlin and Vienna. Her creative journey has lead her through painting with acrylic colours on canvas, crafting paper gift cards, writing quirky poems, and practicing nature photography to Kimics illustrations. Her designs are inspired by the topics, nature and people around her. An expert shape drafter through her working and student life, all Kimics designs are created with Freeform in PowerPoint or Procreate – preferably with a cup of Barista coffee to the right and mood-fitting music.

What sets Kimics apart is a comic-ish style with clean and simple lines and shapes, bold expressive colours, and a straight-to-the-point approach. The inspiration behind each design is explained through a quirky poem transforming everyday items into colourful stories.

How did Kimics start?
2019 Twinning
Kim takes her passion for personalized, selfmade gifts to the next level. For Valentine’s day, she puts some simple shape design together starring Mr. Moon and Ms. Sun on a coffee mug. For Christmas, she designs twinning Christmas jumpers. The characters of the story? - a bean and a pea.
2020 Creative Explosions
As a balance to Kim’s rather dry business administration studies, overall lockdown frustration, health issues, and a sprinkle of family troubles, she escapes into her creative space. At least her craftings got her covered for this year’s presents. She writes and illustrates the book "Grandpa's Goodnight Stories" based on her grandfather's childhood pranks for his birthday. For Christmas, she gets all 2020 designs printed in a 'Best of Kimics 2020' book which increases the demand for digital illustrations on physical products. Of course, another set of matching Christmas jumpers is found under the Christmas tree - this time starring the nut-finding mastermind - a German squirrel.
2021 Suit Up
Kimics goes next level with the first phyiscal products featuring the unique Kimics illustrations. Kim experiments with graphic tees, allover printed pullovers and art prints. Meanwhile, stocking up on new designs.

After an exciting journey of crafting products, writing colourful stories, and building Kim’s first own website from scratch, Kimics is launched.
